Road Safety near Construction Zones

Have a strategy:

Transportation management plan is mandatory for all road construction works. The plan should comprise of traffic control plan, in order to safeguard the workers by controlling traffic doing the work safely through and around the work place. You should supposed to have a controlled traffic system inside the work premise while handling heavy equipment like construction vehicles etc.

Traffic should be controlled properly:

The work place must have warning area along with warning signs by showing the upcoming changes for traffic control by utilizing traffic control devices for pattern shifts , lane closure, buffer area and if the work has been completed it should be intimated with signs to show that the work has been over and the traffic can be resume back to normal condition.

Every traffic control devices like barrels, cones, barriers, signs must comply with legislations.

Allocate isolated work premises:

During road construction, the place will be busy and there might be many works taking place in and around the work zone simultaneously. In order to avoid accidents, make use of barrels, cones, barriers to delineate work areas like material storage , place which indulges heavy equipment , safe parking area and safe place for workers to use on foot.

Use appropriate safety equipment and clothing:

Workers should use appropriate clothing and use Personal protective equipment (PPE) like steel-toed boots, hearing protection device, hard hats, visible clothing etc.

Always be cautious about the environment and surroundings:

Whatever may be your role in job, involve yourself in the work place, and ever be cautious about what happening around you. Never walk behind any heavy vehicle or any vehicle with heavy materials around the work zone. Whenever you can, confront traffic while you are inside the work premises or have a spotter accessible when your back is turned.

The spotters must be used to monitor every move of vehicles and heavy equipment within the workplace along with looking at traffic in order to give alert to employees in case of any risk.
